MOVIE REVIEW: ‘WHITE HOUSE DOWN’ TAKES A MAJOR NOSEDIVE

 
White House Down is completely catastrophic, and I’m not referring to the terrorists that seize America’s most monumental home.

The action-packed film starring Jamie Foxx as the President
of the United States and Channing Tatum as his spur-of-the-moment body guard is being released Friday, June 28 –– a mere three months post the premiere of Olympus Has Fallen, which featured a blatantly comparable taken-over White House storyline with Aaron Eckhart and Gerard Butler characterizing similar roles (stupid, right?).
Directed by Roland Emmerich, (whose credits include Independence Day and The Day After Tomorrow) White House Down zeros in on Sergeant John Cale, a Capitol police officer played by Tatum who tours the White House with his daughter, while a bevy of insurgents costumed as janitors, clandestinely invade the hallways of the President’s house.
When long-ago soldiers and government employees begin to perpetrate havoc on the South Lawn, Cale must –– you guessed it –– step up to the plate and rescue his daughter, all while keeping the president out of harm’s way.
In fact, the most stark contrast is simply that Olympus Has Fallen was rated R while Sony’s White House Down is rated PG-13. The movie is lighter, less violent, and embellished with a streak of humor. I’d say the only gem in this particular flick is not Foxx, nor Tatum, but Joey King –– the little girl who plays Cale’s daughter.
(Oh, and did I mention that the President switches out his Hugo Boss-like work shoes for a pair of Jordans during the big showdown? It was a bit much for me).
